Couldn’t Stand Another Hour of Daylight

“Couldn't Stand Another Hour of Daylight” is one of several sculptures we have by Paul Rhymer. This bronze sculpture is a great horned owl, which is native to the Americas. Early naturalists describe this large owl as the "winged tiger" or "tiger of the air". This piece is a custom piece that the artist did specifically for our collection. Paul Rhymer currently works as a sculptor but previously worked at the Smithsonian Institution as a taxidermist and model-maker. This, plus his hobbies of fishing, hunting, and birding, kept him immersed in wildlife throughout his life. While taxidermy and models are tight and detailed, sculpture gives Rhymer more freedom for interpretation in his wildlife statues. He transitioned as an artist from painting and drawing into sculpture where he now makes very recognizable sculptures of American wildlife. This piece was purchased through the Edmond Visual Arts Commission (EVAC) with a private donor/public matching fund program called Art in Public Places in partnership with an anonymous donor.
