"Precious Cargo" a bronze sculpture by Jason Napier, was acquired for our collection through the Edmond Visual Arts Commission (EVAC) with support from the Art in Public Places matching fund program in partnership with Peggy and Richard Geib. The sculpture portrays a mother cougar gently carrying her cub, a tender moment that blends strength with vulnerability. In Napier’s signature whimsical style, the work resonates with audiences of all ages—parents often remark “Oh, how sweet,” while children delightfully exclaim “Mufasa,” recalling the beloved Disney film The Lion King.

Jason Napier is a self-taught sculptor whose work celebrates the personality, humor, and spirit of wildlife. He began sculpting in the mid-1990s and quickly gained national recognition for his distinctive bronze creations. Each piece is designed to highlight not only the physical form of the animal, but also its character and charm—often with a touch of playfulness that invites an emotional connection from the viewer.

Napier’s sculptures are included in both private and public collections across the United States, and his work has been featured at prestigious art shows, wildlife art expositions, and galleries nationwide. With Precious Cargo, he continues his mission of creating artwork that brings joy, sparks conversation, and reminds us of the intimate bonds shared in the natural world.
