“Space Monkey,” painted by Carlos Barboza, pictures a chimpanzee inside of a space suit. Chimps were sent into space to orbit the earth before humans were, with the first being called Ham. Ham was not the first animal in space but was important to study due to his physical similarities to humans. He returned safely from his flight and lived the rest of his life in the National Zoo in Washington D.C. Carlos has been painting from a young age, but only recently (2021) began creating large-scale murals. He has already made a name for himself in the metro OKC area, with his hyper-realistic portraits and pieces. His mural was painted for the “Rollin’ Deep Mural Festival”. Over the course of 3 days, 13 artists completed 4,700 square feet of murals on our Downtown businesses and alleyways. This large event turned what was once a simple alley into a new destination spot, selfie station, and outdoor gallery. Purchased through the Edmond Visual Arts Commission (EVAC) with a private donor/public matching fund program called Art in Public Places in partnership with Grant Group & Friends of Rollin' Deep 2020. This mural was partially covered due to renovations on the building.
