Unfolding Star

“Unfolding Star” by Kevin Box is a beautiful example of how this artist is able to “cast paper into bronze”. According to his website, originally Box studied design but was quickly uncomfortable with the fact that his graphic design work done on paper ended up in landfills. Taking inspiration from folded paper origami pieces, Box creates giant statues that are durable and also environmentally friendly. The majority of his statues are made of recycled metal and all of them are 100 percent recyclable. This is done to reduce his impact on the environment and keep his artwork from the landfills.
“Unfolding star” depicts a neatly folded origami star in the process of becoming undone. Origami stars are thought to symbolize love and good luck and are sometimes called lucky stars or wishing stars. This sculpture was purchased through the Edmond Visual Arts Commission (EVAC) with a private donor/public matching fund program called Art in Public Places. The donor was the Fine Arts Institute.
