Yellow Ribbon
by Rich Muno (1939-2015)
"Yellow Ribbon" by Rich Muno commemorates a tragic event in Edmond’s history. On August 20, 1986, a disgruntled mail carrier opened fire at the Edmond Post Office, wounding six people and killing 14 before taking his own life. In the aftermath, citizens from across the community donated funds to commission this bronze memorial.
The sculpture depicts a couple standing atop a pedestal within a fountain, holding a yellow ribbon. This imagery reflects the ribbons displayed throughout Edmond neighborhoods following the tragedy as symbols of support for the victims and their families. Ribbons were tied to trees, mailboxes, lampposts, and more, creating a visible expression of unity and remembrance.
Fourteen waterspouts encircle the fountain, each representing a life lost that day. The victims’ names are inscribed on small plaques along the fountain’s edge, ensuring they are never forgotten.
Yellow Ribbon was purchased with private donations through the City of Edmond.Collection Name: Edmond Art in Public Places
